We recently traveled from Venice to Trieste using two regional trains and I have to say, it was a surprisingly bike-friendly experience!

Both trains had dedicated bike areas that were spacious and easy to access. The second one even had charging ports for up to three e-bikes, allowing you to recharge on the go, a smart touch for modern mobility and sustainable travel.

However, one challenge stood out: navigating train stations with a loaded touring bike. Changing platforms often meant carrying bikes up and down multiple flights of stairs, with no ramps or lifts in sight. While there’s assistance available for people with disabilities (which is great to see!), cyclists are largely left to figure it out themselves.

In some countries, you’ll find ramps or dedicated lifts designed with cyclists in mind,

small changes that make a big difference.

Intermodal travel is the future. A few infrastructure upgrades could go a long way toward making it more accessible, inclusive, and truly seamless.

But hey , overcoming these little obstacles is all part of the journey, right?
