Bikepacking, vanlife, backpacking, there are many ways to experiment with minimalism. At its core, minimalism isn’t about sacrifice, it’s about freedom. It’s the art of carrying only what truly serves you, both in your backpack and in your life.
Here are tips to help you start.
1. Begin with awareness
The first time you pack, you’ll probably take too much. That’s normal. Overpacking is part of the learning curve. Instead of being frustrated, treat it as data.
After your trip, make two lists: “What I used daily” and “What I carried but never touched.”
2. Accept the fear of missing out
We often pack from fear: What if I need this? Minimalism is about trusting that you’ll adapt.
Leave one “maybe” item at home. Notice how you manage without it or how you will adapt by finding alternatives. You’ll surprise yourself with your resourcefulness.
3. Listen to your body
Your back, shoulders, legs and energy are your best coaches. Pain and fatigue are signals that you’re carrying too much; physically or emotionally.
Ask yourself: What weight am I carrying that isn’t mine to hold?
4. Practice letting go, one meter at a time
Minimalism is a practice, not a one-time decision. Each trip, you’ll learn to release something, an object, a habit, a thought that no longer serves you.
After each journey, remove one item permanently from your packing list. Apply the same principle to your life: let go of one responsibility or commitment that drains you.
5. Reassess what truly matters
When you return home, everything feels different. A fridge, a bed, a warm shower—suddenly these “ordinary” things feel extraordinary. This gratitude is the real treasure minimalism brings.
Write down three small, everyday things you’re grateful for after your journey. Keep that list as a reminder for busy days.
Minimalism isn’t about how little you own, it’s about how light you feel. Every choice to release weight is a choice for freedom. Every step is practice. And with each journey, you’ll discover that you already have enough, and you already are enough.
